March 15 (Renewables Now) - Oman's Ministry of Energy and Minerals is working on the selection of suitable sites for the deployment of wind and solar power that will be used for the production of green hydrogen.
The ministry is cooperating with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the Ministry of Defence and the Environment Authority to identify the suitable locations in an effort to promote local and foreign investments in the sector, the state-owned Oman News Agency has said, citing an official source at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.
After identifying the sites, the plots will be offered to investors through auctions that will be based on the mechanism for oil and gas concessions, the source was cited as saying.
The number of sites is still unknown but they are likely to be located from Duqm to the Shuwaymiya area in the state of Shalim and Al-Hallaniyyat Islands to Thumrait in the south of the sultanate. The first concession areas are expected to be offered to investors by the end of this year.
The green hydrogen that will be produced at the sites will serve to meet the needs of the local market, including industry, electricity and heavy industries such as iron and aluminium and the excess will be exported.
Meanwhile, the government is also working to prepare the legislation necessary to regulate investments in hydrogen production and the relationship between investors and the government.
