UAE backs Moroccan wind, solar projects with USD 100m - report

Sep 26, 2013 - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will offer USD 100 million (EUR 74m) in financial aid to Morocco for the construction of solar and wind parks, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) said on Wednesday.

The solar and wind capacity is planned to be installed in several villages and outlying areas in Morocco. The initiative is in line with the UAE’s efforts to encourage the development of renewable energy and projects associated with social development in Morocco. The plan is seen to support economic and social growth, the agency said.

Morocco aims to generate 40% of its total energy mix from renewable energy sources by 2020. Last month, the country's Solar Energy Agency (Masen) said it was planning to launch in the fourth quarter of 2013 requests for proposals (RFP) for 300 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP) parks. Currently, Saudi energy developer ACWA Power International is building the first 160-MW CSP plant near the city of Ouarzazate.
