Total Eren plans 2-GW solar farm with huge green H2 hub in Australia

French renewable power producer Total Eren has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a 2-GW-plus solar park that will be powering a 1-GW green hydrogen production complex in Australia’s Northern Territory.

The Paris-based company is proposing to install the capacity near Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory. The pact with the local government, which outlines Total Eren’s collaboration with authorities, was signed on Monday.

Called the Darwin H2 Hub, the site will become home to a huge electrolyser that will enable the production of more than 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The output is planned to be offered both to domestic and international companies.

The photovoltaic (PV) component of the massive scheme will span a total area of 4,000 acres (1,619 ha).

Total Eren, the renewable energy arm of French energy group TotalEnergies, estimates that the project has the potential to create over 2,000 jobs during construction and 175 ongoing jobs.

“Our plan is to accelerate the development of the project to supply green hydrogen and also the opportunity to provide renewable energy which supports the decarbonisation plans for energy-intensive industries in the Territory,” said Kam Ho, managing director of Total Eren Australia.

Globally, Total Eren operates more than 3.5 GW of wind and solar PV capacity.
