September 29 (SeeNews) - Algeria plans to start a programme by the end of the year to add 4 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) power capacity, energy minister Noureddine Boutarfa said, as cited by the Algeria Press Service.

About 300 MW of PV power plants had entered service so far in 2016, the minister told a press briefing earlier this week.

As part of a previously-announced programme, Algeria aims to have 22 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035. This includes about 13.6 GW of solar PV and 5 GW of wind power capacity.

The minister also said it would not be wise for the country to continue to invest in oil production with current prices below USD 50.00 (EUR 44.56) per barrel.
