Sep 19, 2014 - This week Norway's Scatec Solar and US-based Vivint Solar both unveiled IPO plans for USD 191 million and USD 426 million respectively, China took the first place in Ernst & Young's renewables index and GlobalData projected the worldwide offshore wind market to expand to 39.9 GW by 2020.

INDIA TO DOUBLE NEXT SOLAR TENDER BATCH TO 3 GW
On Thursday, India’s minister for coal, power and renewable energy Piyush Goyal said the country will double to 3,000 MW the goal for the second batch of its Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The capacity will be divided in three tender tranches of 1,000 MW.
With such news it is not at all surprising that NPD Solarbuzz forecasts the five top Asia-Pacific markets -- China, Japan, India, Australia and Thailand -- to account for nearly 60% of the global demand for solar PVs in the second half of 2014. Demand from the listed countries is seen to reach 17.2 GW in July-December.

DUKE CONTRACTS 280 MW OF CAROLINA SOLAR CAPACITY
Moving to the US, utility Duke Energy Corp (NYSE:DUK) said Monday it would acquire and build 128 MW of solar power plants in North Carolina and also buy the output of 150 MW of photovoltaic (PV) parks in the same state. The company calculates that the power off-take deals and the power plant investments represent a total commitment of USD 500 million.

OFFSHORE WIND MARKET TO HIT 40 GW BY 2020
Taking a look at the wind market, on Tuesday market analyst GlobalData said in a report that offshore wind installations worldwide are to grow to 39.9 GW by 2020 from 7.1 GW in 2013. China, along with the UK and Germany, will be the main contributors to the projected offshore wind capacity jump by the end of the decade.
In 2013 alone, the segment grew to 1.6 GW, fuelled by capacity additions off the coasts of the UK, Germany, Denmark and Belgium.

CHINA TAKES LEAD IN ERNST & YOUNG RENEWABLES INDEX
Thanks to the introduction of increased feed-in tariffs (FiTs) for offshore wind and a target to add 13 GW of solar capacity this year, China took the first spot in the April-June “all renewables” country attractiveness index by Ernst & Young. The Asian country was at the top position for the first time since May 2013, while the US slipped to the second place due to congressional gridlocks and its failure to provide long-term certainty.

JORDAN, EGYPT UNVEIL AMBITIOUS RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANS
Leaving the hottest for last, Egypt’s minister of investment said Tuesday that the country will soon launch tenders for the construction of 4 GW of wind and solar power plants. Seeking to meet rising power demand, the African country will hold auctions for about 30 GW of coal and renewable energy capacity in the following 10 years.
A bit to the east, Jordan expects to hook 1,800 MW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid by the end of 2018, energy minister Mohammad Hamed said on Wednesday.
