UK-based solar power company Solarcentury said on Monday it has won 1.04 GWp of solar capacity in a recent auction in Chile, awarding land concessions for renewable energy projects.
In alternating current (AC), the capacity is 963 MW.
Having secured the right to build three utility-scale solar projects on government land, Solarcentury expects to invest USD 950 million (EUR 841.6m) in total. The plants' yield is expected to reach as much as 3,000 kWh/kWp, the firm pointed out. They will be located in the North of the country, on land offering great irradiance and cool temperatures.
More specifically, the 314-MWp Pintados will be built in Tarapaca, while the 185-MWp Sureste de Calama and the 537-MWp Maria Elena Noreste schemes will be located in Antofagasta region.
These projects will operate without any form of government subsidy with a rent being paid to the government for the land use, Solarcentury noted.
Overall, the Ministry of National Assets of Chile awarded 11 sites owned by the federal government, which can become home to around 2,614 MW of new capacity.
In addition to Solarcentury, Enel Green Power Chile SA, Caldera Solar SpA, Copiapo Energia Solar SpA, Sonnedix Chile Holding SpA, Solarpack Chile Limitada, Engie Energia Chile SA and EDF En Chile Holding SpA are also on the list of winners.
Currently, Solarcentury is building 644 MWp of projects in Europe and has a global pipeline of 6 GWp.
