Saudi Arabia's SWCC eyes 3 more solar desalination plants
Oct 5, 2012 - Saudi Arabia-based Saline Water Conversion Corp (SWCC) intends to build three more solar-powered water desalination facilities in Haqel, Dhuba and Farasan, Zawya news agency said Thursday, citing a company official.
SWCC governor Abdul Rahman Al-Ibrahim told the agency that the projects were in line with the company’s plan to cut its dependence on oil by using alternative energy. SWCC has two operating solar desalination plants in Al-Khafji and Jubail.
The corporation is the biggest producer of desalinated water worldwide, Zawya said, with an 18% share in global output. It also produced 41% of the desalinated water in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. Furthermore, SWCC brings 9% of Saudi Arabia’s electricity generation.
