Pakistan awards LOIs to 793 MW of solar schemes - report

Jul 15, 2014 - Pakistan’s Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) has issued letters of intent (LOIs) to 24 projects for the construction of about 792.99 MW of on-grid solar parks, the Associated Press of Pakistan said Monday.

Four of the companies have submitted feasibility studies for their projects and one feasibility study has already received AEDB’s approval, the news agency said, citing unnamed official sources. Other companies are currently preparing the studies, according to the report.

Pakistan’s government intends to install 1,000 MW of solar farms in the near future, of which 100 MW will come from the 100-MW first phase of the Quaid-i-Azam project in Punjab province. The second and third phases of the complex will have capacities of 300 MW and 600 MW, respectively. In addition, AEDB has awarded tax exemption certificates for private sector firms for the installation of 64.57 MW of solar modules.

Pakistan aims to source 10% of its total power from renewables by 2015 as part of its efforts to cope with energy shortage.
