Oman plans 7 solar projects, tender for 3 to kick off this year

Oman has plans for the construction of seven solar power plants, tenders for three of which will be launched in the final quarter of 2015, local media reported, citing the CEO of the Rural Areas Electricity Co (RAECO).

The Sultanate will seek investments from the private sector for the purpose of realising the projects, RAECO’s head Hamad bin Salim Al Maghdari told reporters.

A study conducted by RAECO shows that Oman’s 250 kW to 300 kW of installed solar capacity is equivalent in efficiency to 1 MW in Europe. This means that local solar installations would use less panels compared to other regions or countries, Al Maghdari said as quoted by the Oman Daily Observer.

Meanwhile, the CEO presented a USD-1-million (EUR 911,000) solar power system, installed by Bahwan Astonfield Solar Energy Co in the Wilayat of Al Mazyona in Dhofar governorate. It will become commercially operational in September, the newspaper said.
