The government of Jordan has signed 13 deals for the construction of solar and wind parks with a combined capacity of 317 MW and is negotiating the installation of more green plants.
The country’s energy minister Ibrahim Saif said so on Tuesday in a statement sent to The Jordan Times, adding that the agreed projects are expected to be completed in 2018.
At present, Jordan has one 75-MW solar and one 66-MW wind project in progress and the government is also negotiating contracts for an additional 318 MW of wind power capacity with several companies. Moreover, it is considering bids for 200 MW of additional solar projects, according to the report.
A representative for the ministry told the newspaper that Jordan is seen to have 1 GW of renewable energy plants by 2018, with a 20% share of total power generation capacity. The country’s goal is to reach 1.5 GW of installed renewable power by 2020.
The government is also working on expanding grid capacity. In May it was announced that Hanergy will grant USD 310 million (EUR 278m) to boost the kingdom’s grid capacity and thus allow Jordan to connect more renewable power plants.
