Jordan’s Energy Minister Ibrahim Saif yesterday put out a call for expressions of interest (EoI) in developing 200 MW of solar and 100 MW of wind projects in the Kingdom.
The minister said at a conference organised by Edama Association, as cited by the Jordan Times, that experienced companies will be expected to apply to install four solar parks and two wind farms of 50 MW each. These projects will help the country reach 1,600 MW of renewables capacity by the end of the decade.
Back in 2014, Jordan backed out of a call for proposals for 400 MW of renewable energy capacity, as it failed to secure funds for an upgrade of the national grid. Now the government has taken steps to address grid capacity limitations and also to gather information for the development of environmental regulations, Saif was quoted as saying.
The Energy Ministry is to soon finalise details of a tender for a 1-GW grid expansion project, according to the report.
Recently, Enerray SpA announced that the 23.1-MWp Falcon Ma'an solar park in Jordan has been hooked to the grid. Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, Abu Dhabi's Masdar, Korea Electric Power Co (KEPCO) and a number of other energy companies are progressing with wind and solar projects in the country.
