January 11 (Renewables Now) - Energy solutions provider InterEnergy Group announced the acquisition of the 34-MW Matafongo onshore wind farm plus an under-development project pipeline in the Dominican Republic.

In partnership with local lender Grupo Popular SA, the company invested more than USD 52 million (EUR 42.7m) as part of the acquisition.

InterEnergy also acquired a pipeline of assets under development consisting of a 40-MW photovoltaic (PV) project and two additional wind farms of 50 MW.

Located in the Southwest region of the Caribbean country, Matafongo is capable of expanding its current capacity from 34 MW to 50 MW, InterEnergy points out in the press release. With an annual generation of approximately 104 GWh, the wind park is estimated to avoid the emissions of some 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

InterEnergy plans to purchase and develop 860 MW of additional renewable generation capacity not only in the Dominican Republic but also in Colombia, Panama, Uruguay, Mexico and Peru.
