UK solar developer Hive Energy on Wednesday announced the opening of new offices in Buenos Aires as the company prepares to develop tens of megawatts of projects in Argentina.
Energy market expert Horacio Lopez Manzitti has been appointed country manager for Argentina. His task is to take advantage of the new market and emerging business opportunities in the country.
“Already we have a supply network and a team of partners in place who will help us deliver outstanding and top performing solar projects,” he commented, adding that the firm has secured one project in Argentina and is currently developing others with a 250-MW potential.
Hive Energy noted that Argentina had only 8 MW of installed solar power capacity this summer. However, President Mauricio Macri has established a renewable energy target of 8% for the end of 2017 and of 20% for 2025. The company expects this to result in the addition of 12 GW of renewables by 2025.
Last week, the country's energy ministry announced that 17 projects representing 1,109 MW of capacity won contracts in the first tender round of Argentina's renewable energy programme. This includes 12 wind projects for 708 MW of capacity, four solar projects for a combined 400 MW and one biogas project of 1.2 MW.
