German firm to build 100-MW solar farm in Punjab - report

Nov 25, 2013 - The government of Pakistan’s Punjab province has struck memorandums of understanding (MOU) with an unnamed German firm for a 100-MW solar park project, newspaper The News said on Saturday.

The photovoltaic (PV) facility is to be constructed in the city of Sahiwal, central Punjab, with building works expected to last four months.

The media cited Helmut Fugemann, who headed the delegation of the German company on signing the MOU, as saying that the German firm is also willing to build a solar farm in Cholistan. In addition, the government has sealed MOUs with the German company for the construction of a biogas and biomass plants.

The projects are part of the Punjab government’s efforts to cope with power shortage. A recent estimate of Punjab government’s energy department shows that the province currently has a 3,500 MW power deficiency, whereas demand is climbing by 8% each year.
