Engie Brasil Energia SA (BVMF:EGIE3) announced on Wednesday national power sector regulator Aneel has allowed it to switch on a 30-MW solar farm in Rio Grande do Norte state.
Named Assu V, the photovoltaic (PV) facility is located in the municipality of the same name, covering an area of 72 hectares. The plant represented an investment of BRL 220 million (USD 66.3m/EUR 55.7m), Engie said.
Assu V is registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the UN, so it will generate credits for the avoidance of more than 46,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.
With this plant, the firm has now expanded its footprint in the PV sector, affirming its entry into the centralised solar generation market, the CEO of Engie Brasil Energia, Eduardo Sattamini said.
In the country, Engie represents about 6% of the overall electricity generation with an installed capacity of 11,059 MW, of which 90% comes from clean energy sources, the company noted.
