August 26 (Renewables Now) - The local unit of Italian energy major Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) has broken ground on the 382-MW Campos del Sol solar power plant in Chile’s Atacama Region, the company announced on Monday.

Enel Green Power Chile expects to invest some USD 320 million (EUR 288m) in the project, which is located about 60 km northeast of Copiapo. Completion is seen by the end of 2020, at which point the plant will be able to generate some 1,160 GWh of electricity per year.

The company said it has initiated permanent dialogue with five local indigenous Colla communities to identify impact mitigation.

In Chile, Enel has about 7,500 MW of installed power generating capacity, including 4,700 MW of renewables, mainly coming from hydropower plants.
