EDP Energias do Brasil SA (B3:ENBR3) and national bank Banco do Brasil signed on Wednesday a contract for the development of a 5-MWp photovoltaic (PV) project in Minas Gerais state.
The PV facility, to be located in Januaria town, is expected to be up and running in 2019. Its output will go to power 58 of the bank's offices in the state.
Comprised of 15,000 solar panels, the solar plant is expected to generate some 11 GWh per year, which would be enough to meet the annual demand of 4,500 local homes and offset around 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The bank estimates it will save approximately BRL 82 million (USD 21.3m/EUR 18.5m) on its electricity bill over a 15-year period, thanks to the solar contract.
Banco do Brasil has plans to, in the upcoming years, build two other PV farms in Minas Gerais, as well as in Goias, Distrito Federal, Para, Maranhao and Bahia states, it noted.
