Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said on Wednesday it has commissioned a 2-MWp solar carport at its headquarters and at the building of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).
The particular solar carport covers a total of 885 parking spaces at the two sites, using 6,700 locally-made solar modules.
The project was part of the Shams Dubai initiative, which encourages homeowners to install solar panels on their rooftops and connect them to DEWA’s network. To date, a total of 1,145 buildings have been hooked, representing 49.9 MW. There are requests for more than an additional 323.83 MW, DEWA said.
The government entities in Dubai are pursuing a target set by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy to reduce 20% of the energy consumption in all government buildings by 2020.
