July 16 (Renewables Now) - Oman’s Rural Areas Electricity Co (RAECO) is looking for consultants for 11 sites at which it wants to add renewable energy capacity under hybrid independent power projects (IPPs).

The deadline for bids in the tender for the provision of financial, commercial and legal consultancy services is August 7, RAECO said.

The CEO of the state-owned utility, Saleh Nasser al Rumhi, told the Observer the goal of RAECO is to turn diesel powered plants at these locations to hybrid systems with at least a portion of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity. He was further cited as saying that it is expected that between 15% and 25% of the diesel-fired capacity could be replaced with renewable energy sources. The winner of the tender will recommend what percentage of the capacity can be converted and what technology can be used, among other tasks.

Oman aims to have 4 GW of renewable energy generation capacity by 2030.
