Colombia's renewables maintain output as demand in March falls

Colombia’s renewable power plants generated 65.25% of all electricity in March, or an average 124.83 GWh per day, down by just 0.65% month-on-month, Colombian grid operator XM Compania de Expertos en Mercados has informed.

The Colombian government last month introduced a country-wide lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease COVID-19, a decision that lead to the overall decline in demand for electricity. The total daily average power production decreased to 191.3 GWh in March from 202.69 GWh per day in February.

The drop in production came at the expense of fossil-fuel power generation, which was down by 13.71% month-on-month.

Of all renewables in the country, only run-of-river hydro-power plants (HPPs) increased their output in March.
