Colombia, Port of Rotterdam sign hydrogen MoU

The Colombian ministries of energy and transport have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Port of Rotterdam to start discussions about creating a corridor for the export and import of low-carbon and green hydrogen between Colombia and the Netherlands.

The agreement will enable Colombia to move forward with hydrogen production studies and learn from the port about transport logistics to be able to market the hydrogen, the ministry of mining and energy said on Friday.

“With this Memorandum of Understanding we want to stimulate cooperation between the Netherlands and Colombia, [and] also allow companies from both countries to learn from each other and do business together,” Rene van der Plas, Director of Port of Rotterdam International, said in a statement.

The Colombian government released its national hydrogen strategy in September 2021. It set the target to install 1 GW to 3 GW of electrolysers by 2030 and add up to 4 GW of renewable energy to support the green hydrogen production.

According to the document, Colombia has the capacity to produce hydrogen for national consumption, while its northern coast is rich in enough wind and solar resources to allow the country to produce and export cheap hydrogen.
