Cairo uni inaugurates 660-kW solar power system

A 660-kW solar power facility has officially started operations at the campus of Egypt's Cairo University in Giza.

The project is supported by the country’s Ministry of Military Production and was installed for a total cost of EGP 8 million (USD 442,000/EUR 396,000), the university said on its website on Monday. Its goal is to lower consumption from the national power grid and cut the university's electricity expenses, which come at almost EDP 30 million per year, president Gaber Nassar said.

The photovoltaic (PV) system includes panels at 13 buildings of the university hostel, according to the press release.

Cairo University is working on the construction of another solar project which involves the installation of a PV facility at the faculty of agriculture. It also plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Military Production in a project that will lower its water consumption.
