Jan 26 (Renewables Now) - Brazil's Tocantins state launched this week a solar power incentives programme with the goal of promoting the generation and use of solar energy.

The Pro-Solar programme, as it is called, also has the objective of helping the state to rationalise its consumption of electricity.

Investiments under the initiative can be made by public and private investors and will be focused on technological development of photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal energy generation. The applications will be for both commercial and self-consumption systems in urban and rural areas.

Currently, Tocantins exempts from the ICMS tax on goods and services the purchase of solar energy equipment and the surplus of power generated by distributed generation systems connected to the conventional distribution energy network.
