Brazil's Sao Paulo state plans energy auction after Oct - report

Jul 9, 2014 - Brazilian Sao Paulo state plans to hold a regional energy auction for photovoltaic, wind, biogas and biomass projects after October, Sao Paulo's energy secretary, Marco Mroz, told energy news site Canal Energia yesterday.

The government wants to facilitate contracts between investors in the power sector and consumers that need long-term supplies. The contracts will be for 20 to 30 years, though the investors will be given the opportunity to negotiate shorter periods according to their needs.

Biomass is expected to dominate the auction amid the potential of sugarcane bagasse for power generation, despite the reorientation of the central government's incentive policy from biomass to fossil fuel, according to Mroz.

Sao Paulo could also develop solar and wind power, offering proximity to consumption centres and good transmission infrastructure. Solar projects of 20 MW are competitive in the state, the official said.
