Brazil's Chesf inaugurates 1-MWp floating PV array at HPP
Chesf float PV plant at Sobradinho reservoir
Brazillian federally-owned utility Chesf inaugurated on Monday a 1-MWp floating solar system at Bahia's Sobradinho hydropower plant (HPP) as part of an important research and development (R&D) project.
Chesf has plans to install a second plant on the reservoir, lifting the total capacity to 2.5 MWp. In all, the company estimates it will invest some BRL 56 million (USD 14m/EUR 12.6m) in the development of the two photovoltaic (PV) arrays.
The ready facility consists of 3,792 solar modules, covering a total area of 11,000 sq m. Chesf will analyse the efficiency of solar power generation on water as compared to that on land, and how well the PV system can operate together with the HPP.
The utility is also planning to install in 2020 a 1.25-MWp floating PV system in the reservoir of the Boa Esperanca HPP in Piaui state.
