BMR Energy, the Virgin Group unit that develops and operates clean energy projects in the Caribbean and Latin America, has initiated the construction of an up to 5-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Costa Rica.
The Valle Escondido solar power facility is being built in the municipality of Bagaces, Guanacaste province. It has a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).
BMR Energy said it acquired the project late last month and started site activities within days of closing the transaction. The firm plans to complete the plant in the second half of the year. For this project, it employs a local team of engineers, project managers, construction contractors and attorneys.
While Costa Rica’s energy supply is already almost 98% renewable, solar power accounted for only a small portion of that, the developer noted.
