Dubai-based renewables company AMEA Power has joined the second phase of the Agadir desalination project in Morocco, which will be powered by a 150-MW wind farm.<p data-end="439" data-start="304">AMEA Power will deliver the project through a joint venture with Spanish firm Cox Energy, which developed and owns the first phase of the plant.<p data-end="692" data-start="441">The second phase is expected to be operational by the end of 2026, while the wind farm, located in Laayoune, is scheduled to come online in 2027. Upon completion, the Agadir desalination plant will have a total capacity of 400,000 cubic metres per day, up from 275,000 cubic metres currently, supplying drinking water to two million people and irrigation water to 13,600 hectares of farmland in one of Morocco’s most water-stressed regions.<p data-end="815" data-start="694">The combined investment in the desalination expansion and associated wind facility is expected to exceed EUR 250 million (USD 289.1m).<p data-end="815" data-start="694">"Our entry into the second phase of the Agadir desalination project in Morocco, under the Water Alliance Ventures platform, reflects AMEA Power’s ambition to address both water and energy challenges through integrated solutions," commented AMEA Power's chairman Hussain Al Nowais.
