April 23 (Renewables Now) - Chilean power producer AES Gener announced on Thursday that it is developing a 3-MW photovoltaic (PV) project together with Chilean copper mining company Pucobre.

The solar plant will be located at the El Buitre tailing dam, not operational since 2014, in the commune of Tierra Amarilla, the Atacama region. The PV park is part of the self-generation system of Pucobre's San Jose copper concentrator plant.

Since January 2021, all the energy used by Pucobre to produce copper in each of its plants and deposits is 100% renewable, AES said in its press release.

According to the company, this is the first time in Chile that land with such characteristics will be transformed into a new asset for renewable energy generation.
