AES Brasil Energia SA (BVMF:AESB3) has inked a pre-contract advancing the feasibility studies for a plant with a capacity to produce up to 2 GW of green hydrogen and 800,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year.
The energy company inked the agreement with the Pecem industrial and port complex in Brazil's Ceara state following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in December 2021. AES Brasil plans to use the infrastructure at the port to export hydrogen and its derivatives, mainly to European countries.
The pre-contract enables the energy firm to press ahead with the project's technical and commercial feasibility studies.
Italo Freitas, Vice President of New Solutions and Innovation at AES International, said that green hydrogen is a key to the planet's decarbonisation movement and Brazil has one of the best conditions for its production thanks to the complementarity of its clean sources and for its geographical location.
At present, AES Brasil has a 100% renewable portfolio with 5.2 GW of total contracted installed capacity and a potential 1.5 GW of wind and solar pipeline under development.
