Abengoa Solar plans 210-MW plant in northern Chile

Dec 18, 2014 - Abengoa Solar Chile SpA, local unit of Spanish engineering company Abengoa SA (BME:ABG), proposed an environmental plan for a new, 210-MW solar energy plant in the northern Antofagasta region on Wednesday.

The Atacama 2 plant comprises a solar power tower facility of 110 MW, with 15-hour energy storage, and a photovoltaic park of 100 MW, along with a substation and a transmission line. The project is expected to cost USD 1.2 billion (EUR 973.3m) and it will be developed in a rural area in Sierra Gorda municipality to sell energy in the northern system SING.

The company said that Atacama 2 is a new project.

In January, Abengoa won a contract from the Chilean government to install another 110-MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in the Atacama desert, in Antofagasta's Maria Elena municipality.
