January 9 (Renewables Now) - Chinese solar module maker Wuxi Suntech Power Co Ltd expects to reach in the current quarter an annual capacity of 500 MW for its black silicon solar photovoltaic (PV) cells.

The company said last week that it has entered mass production of the self-developed PV cells. It has been working on the black silicon solar cell processing technology since June 2017.

Suntech's R&D team was able to fix certain issues related to the diamond wire sawing of multi-crystalline wafers with the help of a self-developed metal assisted chemical etching process. It also lifted the efficiency of the cells through optimised nanostructured processing technology.

The development of higher efficiency PV cells and the search for new ways to integrate the black silicon and PERC technologies are the main tasks on the agenda of Suntech’s R&D unit, the company noted.
