(SeeNews) - Jan 2, 2014 - The fast expansion of wind power projects in Brazil, which in 2013 outnumbered the other projects in the government's energy auctions, is seen to push up the mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the next years, local business daily Valor reported.
Wind power developers will have to seek large-scale gains in order to make the projects more profitable, which will probably reduce the number of companies operating in the sector. Today, there are about 30 groups operating wind projects or building ones. However, only three or four of them are expected to remain, controlling over 50% of the market when the sector becomes more mature, the article states.
Brazilian wind power sector is going through a phase of euphoria with the last governmental auctions in 2013 having contracted the future output of 4.7 GW projects. However, there are doubts whether the developers and equipment manufacturers will have the financial capability to complete so many projects.
Brazil is seen to close 2014 with an installed wind power capacity of 7.7 GW, representing 4% of the energy mix. In five years, the wind capacity is seen to hit 14 GW.
