Willbros unit to develop 37 MW PV project for BP Solar Int
(ADPnews) - Dec 13, 2010 - US oil and gas contractor Willbros Group (NYSE:WG) announced last Thursday that its unit has received an order from BP Solar International Inc to build a 37 MW photovoltaic (PV) plant on Long Island, New York.
Hawkeye LLC, which is a unit of Willbros' Utility Transmission & Distribution segment, will deploy approximately 164,312 solar panels on 200 acres (81 hectares) owned by the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The electricity output from the system will be stepped up by means of a transformer from 13.8 kV to 69 kV and transmitted via an underground line to a nearby Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) substation prior to entering its grid. Nearly all of the output will be sold to the authority and its customers under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
The project is anticipated to be completed in the second half of 2011.
