Walmart powers up 100th rooftop solar system in California
Jul 31, 2012 - US discount retailer Walmart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) on Monday said that it had put in operation its 100th rooftop solar power system in the state of California at its store in the city of San Diego.
The move is a step towards the company's target to source 100% of its power from renewable sources.
US solar system and energy efficiency firm SolarCity has installed, and will manage and maintain 70 of the 100 solar systems.
Walmart plans to have solar systems on 130 of its stores or some 75% of its locations in California by the end of 2013. All the systems are estimated to generate up to 70 million kWh of power, enough to supply some 5,400 households and save 21,700 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year. The systems are expected to supply 10% to 30% of the power needs at each facility, Walmart added.
