A unit of Australian fuel producer Viva Energy Group Ltd (ASX:VEA) has placed a EUR-4-million (USD 4.04m) electrolyser supply order with a subsidiary of Norwegian hydrogen solutions company Nel ASA (OSE:NEL).
Nel Hydrogen US will deliver an MC500 containerised PEM water electrolyser to Viva Energy Australia Pty Ltd with the capacity to produce up to 1,063 kg of hydrogen per day. The delivery should be completed in the third quarter of 2023.
Viva Energy is the owner of the Geelong refinery near which it is currently building a new energy service station to provide battery charging and hydrogen refuelling. It will use the Nel electrolyser to supply fuel-cell-grade hydrogen directly on-site to the dedicated fueling station. This project is being funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the government of Victoria.
According to Nel, the purchased electrolyser will be the largest one in Australia when installed.
