Vietnam clears 79.5 MW of wind, solar projects - report

Wind and solar projects with a combined capacity of 79.5 MW have been given the green light by provincial authorities in Vietnam, Viet Nam News reports.

The People’s Committee of central Quang Tri Province on Friday awarded permission for the construction of a 30-MW wind park in Huong Hiep Commune, Dakrong district. The so-called Huong Hiep 1 wind project was proposed by Tan Hoan Cau Corp and is estimated at more than VND 1.55 trillion (USD 68m/EUR 57.6m).

Planned to be switched on in December 2020, the wind park’s 12 turbines are expected to generate more than 126 million kWh of electricity annually.

Meanwhile, Licogi 13 JSC has secured approval to install a 49.5-MWp photovoltaic (PV) park in the communes of Gio Hai and Gio Thanh, also in Quang Tri Province. The project will require an investment of VND 1.2 trillion and is scheduled for completion in June 2019.

The LIG-Quang Tri solar is seen to produce 67,960 MWh of electricity per year.

Vietnam has set a 2030 goal of sourcing 32% of the energy consumed from renewables after cancelling its nuclear plan. For wind power, in particular, the Asian country aims at 800 MW of installed capacity by 2020 and 6,000 MW by 2020, as compared to 190 MW now.

According to the report, provincial authorities have consented five wind projects totalling 150 MW, while financing is being sought for 17 PV parks with a combined capacity of 930 MW.
