January 18 (Renewables Now) - Victoria’s state government will provide an over AUD-7-million (USD 5m/EUR 4.4m) funding package to support renewable hydrogen projects, mostly in the heavy transport segment.

The recipients of the grant funding initiative were announced by Lily D’Ambrosio, the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, on Friday.

Through its Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund, Victoria will allocate AUD 6.6 million to six projects using renewable hydrogen in real-world applications. Of the total pot, bus manufacturer Volgren Australia will receive AUD 1.8 million to develop two commercial-grade hydrogen fuel cell electric buses that will make trial journeys within the public bus network. According to the company, each diesel bus replaced by a hydrogen fuelled alternative will help save around 30 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) annually.

Viva Energy Group will be awarded AUD 1 million to build a new hydrogen refuelling station co-located with electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Another AUD 1 million will go to Energys Australia Pty Ltd, while AUD 1.5 million will be provided to France’s Air Liquide. Both of the two companies intend to produce renewable hydrogen via electrolysis for transport applications.

With AUD 1.1 million, Telstra will deploy a renewable hydrogen fuel cell generator at regional mobile communication sites. Boundary Power will seek to develop Australia’s first system utilising solar power and a renewable hydrogen hydride battery to store and generate electricity.

According to the government’s announcement, over AUD 600,000 will be shared by eight companies to back the completion of business cases and feasibility studies for projects that would involve the use of renewable hydrogen.
