Vattenfall expands Swedish portfolio with 80-MW wind acquistion

October 26 (Renewables Now) - Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB said on Wednesday it has bought the 80-MW Vargtrask wind project in Sweden from local developer Nordisk Vindkraft.

The particular project envisages the construction of a wind farm with up to 21 turbines in Asele and Lycksele municipalities, in the northern Vasterbotten County. It was permitted in October 2016 but commercial operations can be launched in 2021-2022, Vattenfall said. The Swedish utility expects to take a final investment decision in 2020.

The wind park will be located near Vattenfall’s 353-MW Blakliden and Faebodberget wind farms, the construction of which was initiated earlier this year. Once up and running, it will be able to generate enough electricity to meet the demand of around 50,000 local homes each year.

Vattenfall Wind Sweden’s head of development Daniel Gustafsson commented: “As a part of our strategy to grow within renewable energy, acquisition is one of several possible ways to go.” He said that Vargtrask’s proximity to the Blakliden and Faebodberget complex, as well as the operational 78-MW Stor-Rotliden wind park, provides the company with “clear synergies.”

The acquisition is also in line with Vattenfall’s plans to grow on the Swedish wind power market, added Karl-Johan Hellblom, project manager for the Blakliden and Faebodberget scheme.
