US NRG Solar, Boeing building 25-MW solar park on Pacific island of Guam
Mar 4, 2014 - US NRG Solar, a subsidiary of utility NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG), said today it has begun the construction of the 25-MW Dandan solar park on the US Pacific island of Guam in cooperation with US aerospace company Boeing (NYSE:BA).
NRG Solar owns the project for which Boeing will provide engineering, procurement and construction services.
The Dandan solar park is the first solar project in Guam, the largest of the Mariana Islands in the South Pacific. So far, Guam has been relying on imported fuel oil and diesel for its energy generation.
The facility will generate enough electricity to power up to 10,000 households while saving 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. In addition, the solar park will offset the consumption of around 2 million barrels of fossil fuels and will save around USD 300 million (EUR 218m) of fuel imports.
NRG Solar has secured two 25-year power purchase agreements with Guam Power Authority (GPA) for the operation of the plant.
