(SeeNews) - Nov 15, 2013 - US aircraft maker Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) and Brazilian airline GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (SAO:GOLL4) announced yesterday they signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aimed at increasing the sustainable aviation biofuel supply and use in Brazil.
Under the MoU, signed at the Latin America and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) Airline Leaders Forum 2013, the two companies agreed to work together to speed the research, development and approval of new sources of sustainable aviation biofuel. GOL plans to use sustainable bio jet fuel on 200 flights during the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014, and to use biofuel on 20% of its flights during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The partnership is in line with GOL's plans to increase the use of lower-carbon jet fuel on its flights, and it will benefit long-term development of a new sustainable aviation biofuel industry in Brazil. On October 23, Brazil's Aviator's Day, GOL conducted Brazil's first commercial biofuel flight in a Boeing 737-800 powered in part by sustainable aviation biofuel made from waste cooking oil and blended by Brazilian oil and gas major Petrobras (SAO:PETR3), with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
