Jul 31, 2012 - US bio-based solar module components maker BioSolar Inc (OTC:BSRC) said Tuesday it had secured all technical Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certifications needed to start shipping its bio material-based backsheets.
Backsheets are used to cover solar cells and protect them from the environment.
One of the certificates obtained by the firm is US’s 130-degree C Relative Thermal Index (RTI), which defines the temperature below which a material will not be affected by long-term thermally induced chemical degradation. BioSolar said its BioBacksheet had shown better results than the competitive products at the end of the 14-month test.
The company is working with a several solar manufacturers willing to integrate the bio backsheets into their products. It recently contracted Stevens Urethane, part of JPS Industries (PINK:JPST), to manufacture its backsheets for North America, thus ensuring it was capable to meet potential order inflow. Through the end of the year, BioSolar plans to bolster its sales efforts.
BioSolar explained that its BioBacksheet had two major advantages to similar products -- their high thermal conductivity rapidly draws heat away from the solar cells, thus boosting the power output of the solar panel; the product has a USDA BioPreferred certification which makes solar panels using it more attractive to US government agencies.
