German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) said on Friday that it is involved in three major hydrogen projects, surpassing 400 MW of total electrolysis capacity, that were shortlisted to receive federal and state funding.
As announced earlier, the German government has selected 62 projects in a process to disburse over EUR 8 billion (USD 9.76bn) in funding under the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) programme targeting hydrogen developments.
RWE explained in a separate statement that these 62 schemes will take part in a selection process at the European level that is scheduled to start on June 8. The projects proposed by the EU states and Norway will be linked up with each other and evaluated. First funding decisions should be announced next spring.
Among the three “nominated” proposals with RWE involvement is the GET H2 project that calls for the installation of a 300-MW electrolyser plant in Lingen. That particular scheme also includes the construction of a green hydrogen storage facility in Epe and a green steel production facility in Salzgitter, as well as the conversion of a gas pipeline that connects a number of sites to the Dutch gas network. In addition to RWE, partners in this initiative are BP, Evonik, Nowega, OGE and SalzgitterFlachstahl.
Another selected project is AquaPrimus 2, part of the AquaVentus initiative, under which RWE will lead the installation of two 14-MW wind turbines with integrated water electrolysis off the coast of Heligoland by 2025.
Last but not least is the HyTechHafen-Rostock project as part of which RWE will build 100 MW of electrolysers in the Rostock seaport for the production of green ammonia. The German utility has teamed up with Rostock Port and other local partners on this project.
