Hawaiian Electric Company Inc on Tuesday released the names of all projects that progressed to the final award group in its recent renewable energy procurement.
As announced last month, the utility has selected projects for the generation of 460 MW of solar power and close to 3 GWh of energy storage in the largest renewable energy procurement in the state of Hawaii. The winners will now be negotiating contracts for these projects that should later also be approved by the state’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
The concluded competitive process concerned projects on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island and Hawaiian Electric expects to unveil the results for Molokai by the end of next month. The company is also working on a request for proposals for Lanai that is planned to be issued later in 2020.
Since the initial announcement, a number of developers unveiled their awards themselves, including Plus Power, Longroad Energy, Bright Canyon Energy, Canada’s Innergex, SB Energy of Japan and AES Distributed Energy.
The largest of the bunch is Plus Power’s 185-MW/565-MWh Kapolei Energy Storage project on the island of Oahu.
Six of the awarded projects have an estimated completion scheduled for 2022, while the remaining 10 are seen to be put on stream in 2023.

The company noted that if all projects are finalised, it will add almost seven points to its renewable portfolio percentage by 2025. The target is reaching the mandated 30% of renewable energy by the end of this year and potentially surpass 40% by 2030, 70% by 2040 and hit 100% of clean energy for electricity by 2045.
