Univergy developing 15-MW solar project in S Korea

Spanish-Japanese company Univergy International is working on the development of a 15-MW solar project in South Korea’s Gyeongsang Province, it said on Thursday.

The company unveiled the scheme at a working meeting in Spain discussing opportunities for renewables collaboration between Spain and South Korea. The project itself, called Yeongiu, is expected to be finalised in the first quarter of 2019, said Yago Acon, Univergy’s executive director of project development for Southeast Asia and the European Union.

Univergy has been active in South Korea since the end of 2017 and recently set up a new office in Seoul, which was launched after the government finalised a plan make renewables a leading power generation source and gradually phase out nuclear and coal power plants.

The country’s goal is to lift its renewables capacity to 63.8 GW by 2030 from 15.1 GW last year. The Spanish-Japanese company has set a goal to develop 300 MW of renewable energy project in South Korea, in line with that target.
