UK's Banks Renewables plans 50-MW solar project plus storage in South Yorkshire

UK firm Banks Renewables on Tuesday said it is preparing a planning application for a solar farm in South Yorkshire, England that will have a capacity of up to 50 MW and will be coupled with a 50-MW battery energy storage system.

The Common Farm solar project will be located on agricultural land in Dinnington, close to Banks’ Penny Hill wind farm. The associated battery will link directly into an electricity substation around three kilometres to the north of the site.

Banks Renewables, part of The Banks Group, expects to file the planning application with Rotherham Council in the coming months, with a decision potentially coming by the end of the year.

The company said it would provide at least GBP 50,000 (USD 60,000/EUR 58,000) of the project revenues each year as part of a package to support local good causes.

Lewis Stokes, senior community relations manager at The Banks Group, commented that maximising the production of domestic renewable energy is a key part of the UK’s journey towards its net zero targets, “especially within the current energy security climate.”
