UIL Holdings wins planning permit for 5-MW solar project - report

Oct 28, 2013 - US firm UIL Holdings has received planning permission for a 5-MW solar plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the Connecticut Post said on Saturday.

The consent was granted by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority last week.

UIL Holdings, which owns power distribution firm United Illuminating, will install the solar power facility at an old landfill site, which has not been used for years. The daily cited UIL Holdings’ senior vice president of customer and business services Tony Marone as saying that the project is valued at between USD 25 million (EUR 18.1m) and USD 30 million. The developer will also make payments-in-lieu of taxes for use of the landfill.

The solar system will consist of 1,000 solar panels, according to estimates of Bridgeport’s mayor Bill Finch. The project also calls for the installation of two fuel cell units, each with a capacity of 2 MW, which are expected to be installed by US FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FCEL).
