Toyota wins grant for US green hydrogen project

Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203) has received a USD-1.9-million (EUR 1.62m) grant for a green hydrogen demonstration project in Washington state, the company announced earlier in the week.

The project is being developed in partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Douglas County Public Utility District and the Renewable Hydrogen Alliance.

The grant from the Centralia Coal Transition Board will be used for a hydrogen production facility and what will be the first hydrogen fuelling station for fuel cell electric vehicles (EV) in the state.

Douglas County will supply hydropower for the project, which will be used to power the electrolyser that will split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

The hydrogen fuelling station, expected to open in late 2021, will serve about 10 Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell EVs initially. The first sites are expected to be close to public fleets in the Lewis and southern Thurston County area and also halfway between the Seattle and Vancouver/Portland metro areas.
