September 24 (Renewables Now) - The North American arm of Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203) has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) to offtake most of the output of a 100-MW solar project in DeSoto county, Mississippi.

The contract, announced on Wednesday, is for an 80-MW portion of Clearway Energy Group’s 100-MW Wildflower solar project, which is located close to Toyota's plant in the state. The solar park is expected to start operations in 2023.

This is the second VPPA between Clearway and Toyota. Last year the carmaker agreed to buy power from the 110-MW Black Rock wind project, which is currently close to completion in West Virginia.

For Toyota, the 80-MW VPPA is a step towards achieving carbon neutrality in its US factories by 2035. The contract is expected to provide electricity equivalent to some 8% of Toyota’s grid consumption in North America.
