Toshiba to deploy PV-hydrogen system at Japanese resort

Japanese conglomerate Toshiba Corp (TYO:6502) said Wednesday it will equip a Holland-themed resort on Kyushu island with a system, which uses renewable energy and hydrogen to generate electricity.

The order came from Huis Ten Bosch Co Ltd -- the owner of the Henn na Hotel, located in the city of Nagasaki. The resort model of the H2One independent energy supply system will be installed at its Phase-2 building, which is scheduled to open in March 2016.

The system consists of photovoltaic (PV) panels, storage batteries, water electrolysis equipment, hydrogen and water tanks, and fuel cells. The solar power is used in the electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen, which is then stored and used in fuel cells to generate electricity and hot water.

In April, Toshiba started operations at a demonstration facility using the H2One technology in the city of Kawasaki. The current contract marks its first commercial order for the system, it noted.
