Tongwei starts construction of 30-GW solar cell factory in China

March 27 (Renewables Now) - China’s Tongwei Group on Wednesday broke ground on a 30-GW high-performance solar cell and supporting project in Jintang County, Chengdu City.

The group said in a statement today that it will invest a total of CNY 20 billion (USD 2.82bn/EUR 2.56bn) in the so-called Tongwei Solar Photovoltaic Industrial Base Project located in Huaizhou New Town.

Tongwei expects the Phase I project to be finalised by the end of the year, with a production launch scheduled for early 2021. The overall project is seen to create more than 10,000 job opportunities.

According to the announcement, the complex will be exporting photovoltaic (PV) products to European markets.
